Are you a depletist? – Part 2

The depletist concept was unveiled at JUICE on Sunday, October 15, 2006 by Chris Braden, a collaborator from the 4th year Think Tank class at the Ontario College of Art and Design. Depletist is their creation – a new word that appears to fill a vacuum in our conversations about the environment. The following is an email I received from a friend and speaker at JUICE, Robert Ouellette:

Friday, October 20, 2006

Hi Robin, for your information I was an invited respondent at the United
Nations Symposium on Sustainability and Urban Design in New York this
Wednesday. In my talk at the end of the day, I was able to pass on the
“Depletist” meme to some of the world’s most influential academics and
politicians. After an intro on how the coming generation of students are
fully engaged in the environmental cause, I read the dictionary definition
of “Depletist” to the crowd. They loved it!! As the event closed audience
members could be heard saying in response to some shameful design practice,
“That is what a depletist does.”

Thanks to all of the students at OCAD who made such a great contribution to
the event last Sunday and whose work has now reached the ears of the UN.

Regards, Robert
