Wow, I never imagined that it could be so difficult to get people like Wikipedia to allow us to post "depletist" as an article. Because the word has not been published in a magazine, journal, or book, it is not reliable enough. I hope in the future when it is in common use that it will be. We are still being discussed for deletion.

I’m sorry I am late to this and the other discussions on this blog. I’ve been out of town and Robin just introduced me to it.

Regarding fashion… The only way to subvert any power – be it the fashion industry, music industry, politics, etc. is to not recognize its power over us. That doesn’t mean not to pay attention or not to criticize, it merely means don’t treat actions as a reaction. Richard Rorty has a great essay to this effect “Why I am not a postmodernist” which explains how we cannot be defined by or subjected to values we do not actually hold. He’s done the best job so far at untangling Debourd’s paradox of spectacle – and the paradox of postmodernism as well (which Debourd predicted and feared as the ultimate evil outcome of a society of the spectacle). And of the situationists, I think Vaneigem does a better job than Debourd at explaining this paradox of mass culture, and offers at least some suggestions on what, if anything can be done about it. The Revolution of Every Day Life (http://www.nothingness.org/SI/vaneigem.html). Your post reminds me a little of him.

I like your posting and I like your call to action via participation. But I disagree with the method. Dressing generic is not the solution. Dressing authentically is. And, yes, I believe authenticity does exist. Outside interpretations (business or cultural) of fashion do not necessarily impact our own, self created, aesthetics. There is nothing wrong, or even shallow, with using fashion and externalities as a means to express oneself, so long as the intent and desire is authentic. (And I don’t buy the argument that people can’t understand their own desires through the layers of social marketing, though I do believe it is difficult).

Fashion is not meaningless, and as many before and after Debourd have commented the means is the method. Visually reflecting ‘the revolution’ which in this case is expression against mass culture does not have to be “vanity.” It can merely be what it is, a visual (and valid) form of protest. The situationists certainly knew the value of visual protest. And the protest does not have to be a protest against ‘fashion.’

Likewise, it does not have to be a protest at all. It can be an assertion of the positive – a way not to confront, but to declare the importance and pleasure of (as you also mention) actively participating, which could take the form of dressing up – because it makes people smile, or laugh, or think. I often think this in New York, where I live. People walk the streets in all sports of get-ups for all sorts of reasons ranging from as you mention, vanity, to insecurity to just because. And the spectacle has value. It alerts the ‘non-participants’ that it is possible. There is value in that. It would be a shame to assume that all observers – spectators – do not grow from the experience. Empathy is sometimes in order.

Fashion can be, and often is, a form of art – not as an industry, but as a reflection of personal taste in color, texture, and composition – new shapes, forms and objects (beyond scene/trend). We should not sacrifice our creativity to battle commoditization. We should engage it. The point is not to be weird or generic. The point is to be free.

At the OCAD open house this weekend our class had a presentation on loop and invited visitors to come see what we've been up to this term. There was a lot of positive feedback.
After seeing the presentation a tiny, old, eastern european lady came up to me and said "thank you." I asked her what she was thanking me for, and she replied "for excercising my mind."
"Did you like it?" I asked, her reply was the best answer I could have hoped for. "It is not a matter of liking or disliking. You stimulated me intellectually, and as students and artist that is what I desire from you."
And that's when you realize that a few sleepless nights are well worth it.
